Land of the Free

Land of the Free

from $35.00

In 1772 more than 5000 black soldiers fought for independence in the Revolutionary War. Sadly and unfairly, they were used as pawns and never saw their own freedom. In 1861 black men were turned away from joining the union forces during the Civil War due to Federal law. Eventually, the army needs persuaded the government to partially lift the ban. Recruitment was slow, considering the past history of denying liberty to black soldiers. Frederick Douglass and other leaders encouraged men to join to help ensure the eventual full citizenship and freedom of all black people. Over 168,000 black soldiers served in the Union forces, and 38,000 lost their lives in the fight for freedom and an eventual end to slavery.

The child in the Michael Jordon 23 Jersey symbolizes the gratitude we owe to the soldiers who fought for our liberty.
