Nellie Red Owl - Siege of Wounded Knee
On approximately, March 20th of 1973 the FBI announced a plan to take back Wounded Knee by force. The plan called for the military to lay down a blanket a tear gas over Wounded Knee followed by 200 armed agents to come in firing their weapons. The FBI told the leadership in order to save lives school buses would be available to take all women children and not combatants out of the compound and taken to the Pine Ridge and released. No arrests.
Russ told the FBI we would call a meeting and explain the plan to the people. After Dennis Banks and Russel Means explained the plan to the camp (most if not all the people were there), one woman stood up and voice for strong condemnation against the plan. She said, “I came here to support AIM and the Oglala fighting here. I did not come here to give up without a fight! I did not come here to leave a school bus, I’m not afraid of the FBI. Even if I’m the last one here I will fight on ways to bare fists”. She received a standing ovation from the people. Then one by one the woman began to stand up and voice their similar position. When all had stated their support the same as she did, she stood up again and raised her voice and said it now go back and tell the FBI to go to hell!
